The Terrifying Reality of Plastic Pollution
This heartbreaking video below shows the reality of what is happening in our oceans right now. Despite all 193 members of the United Nations pledging to tackle the problem of plastic pollution we cannot wait for them to solve the problem. Each one of us has a responsibility and opportunity to address this issue individually.
I've written before about how we as women over 40 are often the main ones with purchasing power in our households and how each of us can become wallet activists by ensuring we are buying products that won't end up in our seas and oceans. It's believed that if we continue to use and dispose of plastic in the way we currently do, then in just over 30 years there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. And, it's estimated that around 90% of seabirds, 1 in 4 fish, and 1 in 3 sea turtles have injested marine plastic of some sort. With so much plastic in the oceans and so many fish injesting tiny plastic microbes, it's not hard to see that plastic is making its way into the food chain and, those tiny microbes are by default, ending up in our fish supper.
So, next time you're out shopping opt for food items that aren't wrapped in plastic, and stick to gifts that come plastic free. We can all make a difference, starting right now. And as women over 40, we can make an even bigger difference than most.
